Jackson Appreciates the Arts

February 14th 2008

Art is a subject which has lost favor in public schools due to its relevancy and cost; but, Stephen Jackson hopes to bring art back to the children through his school, Stephen Jackson Academy.

The cultivating of young souls did not end at the academy, though.

Jackson helped create a music label in his hometown called Secret Society Entertainment. The label works with local R&B/rap artists, encouraging them to speak about their experiences in the South.

One such group, F.U.P. Mob, released an album through the label in 2004 called The Law and Order Project.

Jackson, however, is not one to shy away from the mic as can be seen in the vid below.

Game 52: Warriors 120 - Suns 118

February 13th 2008

Stephen Jackson was in the thick of things once again doing most of his damage in the first quarter.

Lately, the Warriors have been known to have lackluster starts where the team gives up 10 or more points then they score after the first quarter. A poor start like the one against the Wizards the day before would not cut it against the high-scoring, playoff-tested Phoenix Suns.

Coach Nellie continously fed the ball to Jackson in the post against the Suns’ best defender, Raja Bell. Time and time again, Jackson completely abused Bell; he got to the rim almost at will. Jackson also made a nice alley-oop feed to Biedrins from the corner which has almost become a guaranteed play between the two at least once every game. Jackson capped off the quarter with one of his three made free throws due to a D’Antoni technical giving him 9 of his total 19 points.

On the defensive side of the ball, Jackson received the unlucky assignment of guarding Amare Stoudamire. Stoudamire is a beast with a much improved jumper, quickness, strength, and length. Jackson had no chance to stop him on the block no matter what he did especially on his gimpy ankle.

As the game moved forward, Jackson became more of a distributor making nice feeds to Davis and Ellis for easy scores.

But, never count him out when the pressure is high and the game is on the line. Around the 4 minute mark, Stoudamire slammed home a dunk with an And1 opportunity. Having made the free throw, the Suns took a two point lead and grabbed the momentum. On the Warriors’ next possession, Ellis drew the defenders to the right baseline and kicked it out to Jackson. With the composure of an assassin, Jackson calmly sank the three with a man running towards his offhand giving the lead and the momentum back to the Warriors. The team never trailed from that point forward.

Game 51: Warriors 120 - Wizards 117

February 12th 2008

Yesterday night’s game couldn’t have happened at a better time even if I scripted it myself. Stephen Jackson poured in 41 points against the Washington Wizards for the win, 16 of which came in the 4th quarter with the game on the line.

Two nights ago against the Sacramento Kings, Jackson landed on Bibby’s foot late in the 3rd quarter and sprained his ankle. He gutted through the rest of that game and everyone expected him to take the week off leading up to the All-Star break. Instead, he played through the pain for 41 minutes against the Wizards.

There was a sequence late in the game which typifies Jackson’s propensity to make improbable shots. With the score at 113-112 Wizards, Jackson missed a free throw. Harrington tipped the ball to Biedrins who shoveled it to Jackson at the top of the key. Without thinking twice, Jackson launches a three and gives the Warriors a 2pt lead! Anyone else in that position would have pulled back or at least measured the bucket. Not Capt Jack! He has ice water flowing through his veins.

Jackson goes on to ice the game with six free throws down the stretch.
